Yonkers is the fourth most populous city in New York State and the most populous city in Westchester County. Some attractions in Yonkers include the Hudson River Museum, the Sherwood House, the Science Barge, Cross Country Shopping Center and the Yonkers Raceway.

In the late 1640s Dutch settler Adriaen Van der Donck built one of the first mills in the United States with a land grant from the Dutch East India Company at the junction of the Hudson and Nepperhan Rivers. Van der Donck was called Jonk Herr and his land became known as The Younckers which evolved to Yonkers. Several businesses erupted in Yonkers at this time including several saw mills, grist mills, land development, blacksmith shops, taverns and general stores.

The Village of Yonkers was incorporated on April 12, 1872. The first elevator factory in the world was built in Yonkers after Elisha Otis invented the first safety elevator and the Otis Elevator Company. America’s first golf course was built in Yonkers in 1888 by Scottish immigrant John Reid. A largely Irish-American neighborhood, Yonkers hosts one of the nation’s oldest St. Patrick’s Day parades and home to a large Italian-American and Portuguese-American population.

The current Mayor of Yonkers is Philip A. Amicone with City Council members: Chuck Lesnick (President), Patricia D. McDow, John M. Murtagh, Wilson Terrero, Joan Gronowski, Dennis Shepherd and John Larkin. Yonkers is served by the Yonkers Public School system which includes over thirty elementary schools, four middle schools and eight high schools.

Notable residents of Yonkers include: Edwin Howard Armstrong who transmitted the first FM radio broadcast, singer Mary J. Blige, Mike Breen, Doug DeWitt, actress Frances Foster, Ella Fitzgerald, Stagga Lee, Steven Tyler and Samuel J. Tilden.

Several films and plays have been set in Yonkers including Neil Simon’s play Lost in Yonkers, the musical Hello Dolly and the starting scene from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

CITY-GATES was chosen by a world wide leader in the construction management industry to provide overhead coiling doors to well known retail store chain in the South East. The slide show you are looking at is one of fifteen trailers that were needed to deliver 225 doors to various sites throughout the South Eastern United States. The customer placed an order for our Model CG300 rolling steel doors. All of the doors were constructed from 20 gage galvanized steel slats, angle iron bottom bars, angle iron guides, counter balanced torsion springs, chain hoist operated and motorized. The size of the doors ranged from 6 feet wide to 35 feet wide. Please contact our special contracts department if you have a similar requirement.
