The West Village is bound by 14th Street to Houston and 6th Avenue to the Hudson River. Since 1916 the area has been known as “Little Bohemia” and the center of bohemian lifestyle on the West Side. One most distinguishable features of the neighborhood are the “off the grid” streets, which were set before the 1811 grid plan for the rest of the city.

Residences of the West Village or “Villagers” love the history in these cobblestone streets, with brownstones dating back to 1799, including the No. 66 brownstone, which was where Carrie Bradshaw ran up and down at her apartment in the TV show Sex and the City. Under the Village Historic District, more than 2,000 of these historically significant buildings were protected.

The history of the West Village makes it one of the most special neighborhoods in Manhattan. Learning myth/facts of the village like Dylan Thomas drank himself to death in the White Horse Tavern on Hudson, the plotting of Lincoln’s murder in the narrow house on Bedford and finding New Yorker Jane Jacobs’s childhood home on Hudson. Not to mention, the West Village was the home of America’s beat generation and was made legendary in the writings of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and Williams S. Burroughs.

Recently, like most bohemian neighborhoods, artists can no longer afford to live in the eclectic West Village and many of its bookstores and gay centers are being turned into maternity and children’s stores.

With mixed feelings about this new move in of boutiques and celebrities, the upside is the village looks great. It’s got a new paint job and streets are much safer than the 1960’s West Village. Especially with residential towers being built over on Hudson, which the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation is constantly protesting, this neighborhood is getting more and more chic by the year.
