Valley Stream is a village in Nassau County inside the southwestern part of the Town of Hempstead. The village is served by the ,Long Island Rail Road. The area was purchased in 1640 by the Dutch West India Company from the Rockaway tribe and the land went undeveloped for two centuries. By 1840 there were 20 families, with private farms living in the area and it was called Fosters Meadow. The Village of Valley Stream was incorporated in 1925.
The developer who brought the area its name (and first post office) was a Scottish man by the name of Robert Pagan. He and his family petitioned for a post office which was in his home and soon named the area “Valley Stream” after the topographical appearance of the area. By 1843, the U.S. Post Office accepted the name of Valley Stream. Robert Pagan’s wife Ellen helped to develop the area by holding Methodist services from her home and changed the family name from Pagan to Payan. The historic Pagan-Fletcher mansion can still be visited on Hendrickson Avenue. In 1922 developer William R. Gibson came to Valley Stream, bought 500 acres and built homes on Avondale, Berkely, Cambridge, Derby and Elmwood Streets. It was Gibson was petitioned for the LIRR to build a station in Valley Stream to accommodate the new class of white-collar commuters his homes were designed for. The LIRR station in Valley Stream was named Gibson station.
