The Theatre District is bound by 6th to 8th Avenue and 54th to 40th Streets. The “Great White Way” otherwise known as “Broadway” otherwise known as “7th Avenue” can be found right in the middle. This neighborhood gets its name because most Broadway theaters, off-Broadway theaters and off-off Broadway theaters lie within its borders.
The Theatre District is one of the most visited neighborhoods in Manhattan. You’ll find tourists, workers, actors, comedians and residences of this colorful neighborhood. On the “New” 42nd Street you’ll find improved bike lanes and walkways. Walk a bit north and you’ll find David Letterman, Deepak Chopra and the Colony music store. Or bop around to check out the ABC Times Square Studios, Carnegie Hall, over 100 year old Hudson Theatre and see Broadway shows like Wicked, Jersey Boys, American Idiot and Julie Taymor, Bono & The Edge’s Spiderman : Turn Off The Dark.
Just to the west is Hell’s Kitchen, where most working theater professionals live and a slew of excellent restaurants. Many tourists are beginning to eat here before the theater to dodge the crowds and overpriced restaurants of Times Square.
Back on Times Square, shop at the Hershey’s store, have a drink at B.B. King Blues Club or see a cabaret at Birdland then stay a night in Hotel Edison. Or any other hotel! Manhattan’s largest hotels are in the Theatre District along with a slew of Italian restaurants and shops. A shop you must stop in to is the gigantic Toys R Us. Brave the crowds and hop onto its Ferris wheel to enjoy the insides of this bright bright store and views from the passersby. You’ll see the MTV offices, the huge Red Lobster and the opening of the classic 42nd Street.
In the newly renovated Times Square walkway, you can view the World Cup, the Tony’s, Thanksgiving Day Parade or celebrate the New Year in style. In fact, there is hardly a day when an event isn’t happening in the heart of Manhattan.
