The Town of Rye is located in Westchester, New York and contains the Village of Port Chester and the Village of Rye Brook.
The Town of Rye began as a small settlement on Manursing Island, which developed into Poningo Neck then into the business section of Rye. Post Road, King Street and Grace Church Street are some of the earliest carriage paths. From the Saw Pit developed Port Chester, which remains a significant sea port. The Village of Port Chester was incorporated in 1868. Early settlers of Rye include three settlers from Connecticut: Thomas Studwell, John Coe and Peter Disbrow who purchased land from the Mohegan Indians. A fourth settler joined in later, John Budd, who was elected in 1663 to be the area’s representative to the government of Connecticut. The Town did not incorporate until after 1745.
A notable area of Rye is the Rye Town Park-Bathing Complex and Oakland Beach, a historic park which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. This park and beach is located next to Playland Amusement Park and used in the 1980’s film Big starring Tom Hanks. Another park within Rye is Crawford Park.
The Town of Rye is currently governed by Supervisor Joseph Carvin, Deputy Supervisor William Villanova with Council Members: David Gelfarb, Michele Mendicino, Robert Nioras. The Town of Rye government’s primary function is “to assess, collect and distribute taxes on behalf of the three school districts and two villages that make up the Town of Rye.”
The Town is served by the Blind Brook Public Schools, the Port Chester Union Free School District and the Rye Neck Union Free School District.
