The Shinnecock Indian Nation lived in the land that became Southampton until 1640 when settlers from Lynn, Massachusetts established residence on the land. The Shinnecock are Algonquian people from Long Island who reside on the Sinnecock Reservation within Southampton. The borders of the reservation were established in 1859. The reservation has a museum, shellfish hatchery, education center, community center, playground and Presbyterian Church. The Shinnecock were known for making wampompeag, shell beads strung onto threads which were used for currency, record-keeping and aesthetic purposes.

The settlers who bought the land included 8 men, 1 woman and a boy who came ashore at Conscience Point. The men were Edward Howell, Edmond Farrington, Edmund Needham, Thomas Sayre, Josiah Stanborough, George Welbe, Henry Walton and Job Sayre.
