South Floral Park was one of the earliest racially integrated villages on ,Long Island. It was incorporated in 1925 and its current mayor is Mayor Geoffery Prime. South Floral Park is tiny, incorporating only about .1 square miles with nearly 1600 residents and derives its name from being south of the Village of Floral Park. The Belmont Race Track borders the village as does Route 24. The Belmont Race Track is a 430-acre racetrack in Elmont, New York and is the home of the 143rd Running of the Belmont Stakes.
South Floral Park is a part of the Elmont Union Free School District, which includes students from Elmont, New Hyde Park and Stewart Manor. The schools in this district include the Alden Terrace, the Clara H. Carlso, the Covert Avenue, the Dutch Broadway, the Gotham Avenue and the Stewart Manor Elementary Schools.
The village is served by the Floral Park Public Library at 17 Caroline Place in Floral Park. The Floral Park Library’s mission is to “provide for the informational, educational, cultural, and recreational needs of the community by enabling access to a wide variety of print and audio/visual materials, electronic resources, and quality programming for all ages.” The current Library Board of Trustees is President John Breheny, Vice-President Faith Greulich, Treasurer Linda Price, Secretary Gerald Hanson, Trustee Mary Mc Laughlin, Library Director Tracey Simon and Library Commissioner Dominick Longobardi.
South Floral Park’s local cable station is Four Village Studio on Channels 18 & 28. The village is served by the South Floral Park Fire Department, where current Mayor Geoffrey Prime served as Lieutenant for one year before joining the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. After Mayor Geoffery served in the District Attorney’s Office he started the law firm of Prime, O’Brien and Tirino, LLP in Garden City. Today the firm is known as Prime & O’Brien, LLP.
The village is just west of New York City.
