Somers is a town located in Westchester County, New York. The town has several lake communities including Lake Purdys, Shenorock and Lincolndale.
Somers was originally part of a land grant from King William III of England to Stephanus Van Cortlandt of New York City. The land was granted in 1697. The part of Van Cortlandt’s estate that became the Town of Somers was known as the Middle District. After Van Cortlandt’s death, settlements began in Somers and his estate was completely partitioned in 1734. Originally, the Kitchawanks, a Mohegan tribe, lived in the area and used the area for hunting and fishing. After settlements began, the town was named Stephentown and established in 1788 and the town’s name was officially changed to Somers in 1808.
The majority of early 19th century circus and menagerie proprietors came from Somers and neighboring communities. Somers was even known as the “Cradle of American Circus”. This all began when Hachaliah Bailey, a Somers farmer and cattle merchant, acquired an Indian elephant and began to exhibit locally. His elephant attracted circus performers from Philadelphia and organized numerous partners and competitors who joined in the business of importing and exhibiting exotic animals. In 1825 Hachaliah Bailey built the Elephant Hotel and a granite shaft and statue of an elephant was erected in front.
Local industries included grist, paper, saw and clothing mills. Another industry opened up after the Croton and Muscoot Rivers were flooded to create the New York City reservoir system and changing the landscape forever. This was how the communities of Lake Lincolndale, Lake Purdys and Lake Shenorock were formed.
