Smithtown was settled in 1665. There is a legend said that the borders of Smithtown were granted by the area’s Chief to settler Richard Smith after he rescued the Chief’s kidnapped daughter. As legend has it, the Chief gave as much land to Smith as he could encircle in one day on a bull. The bull’s name was Whisper whose memory was preserved in true to life size statue built at the fork of Jericho Turnpike and St. Johnland Road. The statue was built in 1903 by sculptor Charles Cary Rumsey from the idea of a descendent of Richard Smith, Lawrence Smith Butler. The statue was built by 1923 but it took 18 years for the statue to be paid for fully and shipped to Smithtown. It sat in front of the Brooklyn Museum while waiting for the necessary $12,000 for the completed work. It took trucks and the railroad to haul to fourteen-foot, five-ton bronze bull from Brooklyn to Smithtown.
