Caleb Heathcote was Scarsdale’s earliest settler and made the area one of nine royal manors of New York, six of which were in Westchester County. A royal manor is an area of land owned by the Crown of the United Kingdom. After Caleb Heathcote’s death his daughters inherited the land and his tenants became the lands proprietors. Scarsdale officially became a town on March 7, 1788.

The first American novel, The Spy by James Fenimore Cooper was written in and about Scarsdale and its marauder stories. The town had a slow beginning but the extension of the New York and Harlem Railroad service and Manhattan’s high rents brought commuters (and energy) to Scarsdale. In 1891 the Arthur Suburban Home Company initiated the change from a rural town to a residential suburb by building a row of one-family homes over a 150-acre farm. By the early 1900s several organizations formed including the Heathcote Association, the Town Club, the Scarsdale Woman’s Club and the Scarsdale League of Women Voters. Scarsdale became an incorporate village in 1915 around the same time it got its first store, a high school and elementary school.

Scarsdale is a coterminous town and village in Westchester County, New York currently governed by Mayor Carolyn Stevens with Trustees: Miriam Levitt Flisser, Katerine Eisenman, David Irwin, Jonathan Mark, Robert J. Steves and Richard S. Toder.

The schools of Scarsdale are all part of the Scarsdale Union Free School District including the Edgewood, Fox Meadow, Greenacres, Heathcote and Quaker Ridge Elementary Schools, the Scarsdale Middle School and Scarsdale High School. Several prominent people attended SHS including Will Hawkins, Linda McCartney, Liza Minnelli, Nina Totenberg, Jacob M. Appel, Eve Ensler, Richard Kostelantez, Harold Kents, Dan O’Brien and Alan Schwarz. Other notables of Scarsdale include Aaron Sorkin, David Galef, Bryan Reynolds, Nichollas Kristof and Gish Hen.

The village and town of Scarsdale are served by the Scarsdale Public Library on Olmsted Road. Founded in 1928, the library operates under a charter from the New York State Education Department and governed by a seven member Board of Trustees.
