Port Chester is a village and part of the Town of Rye in Westchester County, New York. Port Chester is one of twelve villages in the state still incorporated under a charter. The Town of Rye was established in 1788 after a long dispute between Dutch and English settlers. Three Connecticut settlers Thomas Studwell, John Coe and Peter Disbrow bought the land that became the village of Port Chester. The Connecticut settlers bought the land from the Mohegan nation who lived in the area before their arrival in 1660. The original name of the village was Sawpit after the sawpits, which were used in the village at the time. The village outgrew its Sawpit name and incorporated as the village of Port Chester in 1868.
