Pelham Parkway is neighborhood located in the east Bronx, bound by Pelham Parkway, Bronx River Parkway and the IRT Dyre Aveunue Line tracks. The primary road through Pelham Parkway is White Plains Road and the subway line is the 2 train. A diverse neighborhood whose population consists of Hispanic, non-Hispanic, African-American, Italian, Jewish, Albanian, Asian and Russian residents.
The neighborhood was established in 1911, a town with only one lane with building codes rejecting building railroads, apartment buildings or bars. This is why the parkway is so green today. Thanks guys. First apartment buildings started to crop up in the 1920s and housed primarily Eastern European Jewish immigrants fleeing the tenements of the lower east side.
The Bronx Park is a 718-acre recreational facility running along the Bronx River and the Bronx River Parkway. In 1891, 250 acres of the park were apportioned to the New York Botanical Society and another 250-acres was apportioned to the New York Zoological Society in 1895. These groups built The New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo on the grounds.
The New York Botanical Garden is home to some of the world’s largest plant laboratories. Drawing in over 800,000 visitors annually, the garden offers major exhibitions and flower shows throughout the year. The Garden has a dedication to the research in horticulture and plant science. The Pfizer Plant Research Laboratory on the grounds is a pure research institution with projects more diverse than research in universities and pharmaceutical companies.
The Bronx Zoo is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States. As of 2010, the Bronx Zoo provided more homes to more than 4,000 animals and 650 species, which are endangered or threatened. The Zoo features outdoor exhibits such as the “African Plains”, the “Baboon Reserve”, the “Congo Gorilla Forest” and the “Wild Asian Monorail”. The Indoor exhibits include “Jungle World”, “Butterfly Garden”, “Monkey House”, “Madagascar” and the “World of Birds”.
This is one of the greenest neighborhoods in New York City, Pelham Bay Park is an excellent place for hiking, bird watching and viewing wildlife.
