Peekskill is a city in Westchester County and on a bay along the east side of the Hudson River, across from Jones Point. In its early history, the area was an American industrial center. For instance, the makers of Crayola products began as the Peekskill Chemical Company at Annsville in 1864. The city is about 50 miles north of New York City.
The first settler in the area was New Amsterdam resident Jan Peeck, who formalized the Ryck’s Patent Deed of 1684 in the area. The name Peekskill came from his name and the Dutch word “kil” meaning stream. European settlement took place slowly in the early 18th century and its river docks allowed transport of supply items and soldiers to the several other fort garrisons places to prevent British naval passage between Albany and New York City.
Peekskill was incorporated in 1816 and was reactivated in 1826 when Village elections took place. Peekskill became a part of the Town of Cortlandt in 1849 until it separated as a city in 1940.
Peekskill is served by the Peekskill City School District headed by Superintendent Judith Johnson and interim superintendent Lorenzo Licapoli. It consists of: the Uriah Hill, Jr. House, Oakside Elementary, Woodside Elementary, Hillcrest Elementary, Peekskill Middle School, and Peekskill High School.
Peekskill is governed by Mayor Mary Foster, Deputy Mayor Donald Bennett Jr., Coucilwoman Drew Claxton, Councilman Joseph Schuder, Councilwoman Patricia Riley, Councilwoman Marybeth J. Mcgowan and Coucnilman Andrew Torres.
Notable residents of Peekskill include: Chauncey M. Depew, Cornelius A. Pugsley, novelist T.C. Boyle, Mel Gibson, Stanley Tucci, Tre Johnson, Herb Trimpe abd Jackie Gleason.
The Peekskill Meteorite landed here on October 9, 1992. This is the fourth meteorite in history for which an exact orbit is known. The meteorite punched through a resident’s red 1980 Chevrolet Malibu as it struck.
