North Salem is a town in the northeast part of Westchester County, New York which includes the hamlets: Croton Falls, Grants Corner, North Salem, Salem Center, Purdys and Twin Lakes Village.
The town was initially part of Cortlandt Manor until 1751 when the first Town Meeting was held and elected Jacob Wall as the first Supervisor and Nathaniel Wyatt as the first clerk. The first Board of Supervisors meeting was help on May 6, 1788.
The town of North Salem is currently governed by Town Supervisor Warren J. Lucas with Assistant marion LaFranco, Administrative Clerk Maria D’Erasmo and Bookkeeper Susan Morley. Town Board Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm. Town Board Meetings are open to the public.
The North Salem Central School District serves North Salem with Pehquenakonck Elementary School and the North Salem Middle and High Schools. The District strives to “engage students to continuously learn, question, define and solve problems through critical and creative thinking.” The high school boasts sport teams like Varsity Tennis, Baseball, Spring Track, Golf, Softball, Lacrosse and Football.
North Salem is also served by the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library which offers programs for adults, teens and children. The library also offers museum passes for the Danbury Railway Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Beardsley Zoo, Neuberger Museum of Art, Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, American Museum of Natural History and the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art.
The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art boasts several long term installations including SUBSTANCIAL by Grimanesa Amorós and Laundrette by Thomas Hirschhorn. Current exhibitions include: After the Fall : emerging contemporary art from East and Central Europe, Double Dutch and Artist-in-Residence Daniel Pitin. The Center is “dedicated to the development and presentation of exhibitions and interdisciplinary programs that enrich our understanding of contemporary art, its contexts, and its relationship to social issues.”
