New Hyde Park is a village within Nassau County. Like its neighboring towns and villages, New Hyde Park the home of commuters. The Incorporated Village of New Hyde Park is in both the Town of Hempstead and the Town of North Hempstead.

In 1683 the fourth royal governor of New York, Thomas Dongan, was granted an 800-acre parcel of land, including New Hyde Park. Dongan built a mansion on Lakeville Road and the area was known as “Dongan’s Farm”. By 1691 Dongan had fled to New England, then to Ireland.

In 1715 Secretary of the Provence of New York George Clark bought the land and named the area after his wife Ann Hyde. Clark sold the land in 1783 and it was divided into several farms for cattle raising and farming. When cattle farming expanded to the West, farmers had to look into other pursuits. A post office opened in the village in 1871, when it was renamed to New Hyde Park. The Village of New Hyde Park was incorporated in 1927. Many mansions were built in the early days and many of them still stand, including the Cornell-Van Nostrand House in Clinton G. Martin Park, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

The original records of early New Hyde Park settlers are preserved in the office of the Town Clerk of The Town of North Hempstead and are among the oldest records of local government in America. Today’s real property tax is the primary source of income for the village governmental activities.

The current mayor is Mayor Daniel P. Petruccio with Deputy Mayor Robert A. Lofaro, Trustee Richard A. Coppola Jr., Trustee Donald Bardieri and Trustee Lawrence J. Montreuil.

Notable residents include Olympic discus throw 4-time gold medalist Al Oerter, musician John Sombrotto, Meat Loaf keyboardist Frank Doyle and MMA practitioner Luke Cummo. Board Meetings are held every third Tuesday of each month and are open to the public.
