Mount Vernon is a city in Westchester County lying on the border of The Bronx and is the eighth most populous city in the state of New York. The city’s community is split into two with the Northside having a suburban feel, tree lined streets and side-by-side homes, while Southside Mount Vernon has an urban feel. Mount Vernon’s downtown business district is located on the city’s Southside with City Hall, Office buildings and other municipal establishments. Mount Vernon was named after the plantation in Virginia where George Washington spent his final years.
The father of American railroad John Stevens had a huge role in forming Mount Vernon. He was elected as a vestryman in 1852 of St. Paul’s Church in Eastchester and served until 1865. Stevens was also Mount Vernon’s Town Magistrate and was known to be stern and kind with less law-abiding members of the community. Stevens was elected to the presidency of the Industrial Home Association and drew up a paper entitled “Self Imposed Resolutions” which he drew out ways in which he would and would not handle conduct in Mount Vernon. His generosity towards his community and kindness set a tone in Mount Vernon, which it has strived to uphold. The Stevens House was the first “First Family of Mount Vernon” home and was mostly built by hand.
During the 1960s many southern African Americans moved to Mount Vernon seeking better jobs, opportunity and education. At the same time a number of Caucasians from the Bronx and Manhattan moved to Mount Vernon because it was a new “bedroom community” and the rising crime in New York City were driving folks out. The “South Side” became a mostly African American community while the “North Side” became a predominantly Caucasian community. The Metro North railroad track provided a division.
