Mount Kisco is a community that is both a village and a town in Westchester County. The Town of Mount Kisco is coterminous with the village.

The name Kisco comes from a Native American word Kiskatamenahook meaning “brook”. When the railroad was built in the town, the station needed a name and in the early spring of 1847 the station was built and named New Castle. In 1850 a name for the new village growing around this station was proposed and Mount Kisco was agreed upon. Within a few months the Mount Kisco post office was established and James S. Hall appointed postmaster.

The primary land holders at this time were: Seeley Sarles, John Israels, Gilbert Green, Thomas Green, Caleb Kirbt and Sutton Craft. The Village and Town of Mount Kisco are governed by a Mayor and four trustees. Mount Kisco is currently governed by Mayor J. Michael Cindrich, Deputy Mayor George Griffin, Jr. with Trustees: Jean Farber, Anthony Markus and Joseph Morreale.

After the railroad was built, growth and development commenced. The first building erected was the Captain Merritt store house and Smith Hall was the first dwelling house. The Mount Kisco Educational Institute was erected in 1856, Strang’s hotel in 1858 and the Opera House was built in 1884. The village and town were incorporated on June 1st, 1875 with an election help in the Captain Merritt store.

The Village/Town of Mount Kisco is served by the Bedford Central School District which includes: Bedford Hills Elementary School, Bedford Village Elementary School, Fox Lane High School, Fox Lane Middle School, Mount Kisco Elementary School, Pound Ridge Elementary School and West Patent Elementary School.

The Mount Kisco Public Library also serves both the town and village of Mount Kisco. The State of New York charted the Mount Kisco Public Library in 1910. The library offers services such as the Book Discussion Group, Community Rooms, Study Rooms, Computers and museum passes to: The American Museum of Natural History, the Neuberger Museum and the Aldrich Museum.
