Mineola is a village in both the Town of North Hempstead and the Town of Hempstead. The name is drawn from a Native American word meaning “pleasant place”. The village is the home place of several Nassau Country agencies and was legally incorporated in 1906.
Originally part of the “Hempstead Plains” the area was settled and cleared by Dutch and English settlers who were looking to claim an area of their own. The area was named in honor of Algonquin chief Miniolagmaika. By 1898 the Village of Mineola was selected to be the county seat for Nassau County. Governor Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the Nassau County Court House and celebration was had bringing in folks like Frederick Hicks, Congressman Townsend Scudder, Colonel William Youngs and Supervisors William Jones and Edwin Willits. Soon after, ,Long Island’s first hospital would open.
Aviation was a huge activity in Mineola attracting such pilots as Glenn Curtis, the Wright Brothers, Igor Sikorsky, Captain Rene Fonac and the duo Clarence Chamberlain and Bert Acosta took flight in Mineola’s grassy plains. This is also where Charles Lindbergh started his historic flight to Paris and became the first pilot to fly from the United States across the Atlantic alone.
The current mayor of Mineola is Mayor Lawrence A. Werther with Trustee Paul S. Cusato, Trustee Thomas F. Kennedy, Trustee Pail A. Pereira and Trustee Scott P. Strauss.
A volunteer fire department, a volunteer ambulance corps and the Mineola Public Library serve Mineola. The Mineola school district includes Mineola High School, Mineola Middle School, Cross Street School, Hampton Street School, Jackson Avenue School, Meadow Drive School and Millis Avenue School. Mineola was also the center of amateur soccer on ,Long Island with the Mineola Portuguese Soccer Club winning 4/6 championships.
Notable residents include comedian Lenny Bruce, musician Bob Dylan, actor Brian Dennehy, author James Patrick Kelly, American Prosecutor William Dowdell Denson and LA Dadger pitcher B.J. LaMura.
