Lewisboro is a town in Westchester County named after John Lewis. John Lewis was a financier who established a fund for the town and asked that the town be named after him. His fund, the Lewis Fund, was used to purchase educational books for the South Salem Library. The Town is noted for its elaborate gardens, traffic triangles and dry-stone walls.
The first settlers of Lewisboro were mostly from Connecticut and settled themselves around South Salem. The town was formed in 1747 as the “Town of Salem” and by 1790 the town assumed its current dimensions. Its first Presbyterian Church was founded in 1752 and St. John’s Episcopal Church was built in 1855. The first officials of Lewisboro were elected in 1899 and remained in office for two years. Lewisboro was used for many farms including the famous horse farm Echo Farms, owned and operated by Alfred Ridgeway until his death in January 15, 2010.
Lewisboro is governed by a Supervisor and a Town Board. Currently, Lewisboro is governed by Supervisor Charles Duffy and Council members: Peter DeLucia, Frank Kelly and Daniel X. Welsh. The Town is served by the Katonah-Lewisboro School District which includes: John Jay High School, John Jay Middle School, Increase Miller Elementary School, Katonah Elementary School, Lewisboro Elementary School and Meadow Pond Elementary School.
While the Town does not have an official “town center” most residents do their shopping in Golden’s bridge and in Cross River. Other popular places in Lewisboro include: South Salem, Vista and Waccabuc. This rural community also has a number of parks and preserves including the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Mountain Lakes Camp, Onatru Farm, Lewisboro Town Park, Leon Levy Preserve, Brownell Preserve, Fox Valley Park and Old Field Preserve.
