Island Park is located in the Town of Hempstead as part of Nassau County, New York. As of the 2000 census, Island Park had a population of 4,732 with a 2005 estimate at just above 4,741. Island Park is an island within ,Long Island and is delineated by the rails of the Long Beach Branch of the ,Long Island Rail Road which provides access to New York City. The land was originally used to raise pig and cattle also for fishing and clamming by the Native Americans. The Island Park-Long Beach Corporation had a huge hand in developing the Island Park Canal and Bay to make it suitable for residents, soon after a building boom began and by 1926 Island Park was an incorporated village of Nassau County.
The current mayor of Island Park is Mayor James Ruzicka, with Deputy Mayor James D’Esposito. The trustees of the village are Joseph Annarella, Steve D’Esposito, Henry M. Hastava and Irene Naudus. The current clerk is Gomie Persaud and the village meetings are held every third Thursday of every month. Mayor James Ruzicka also writes quarterly newsletters to the residents of Island Park.
The Barnum Island and Harbor Isle fire districts services Island Park and the Island Park Post Office serve this village and the Barnum Island hamlet and the Harbor Isle hamlet. Religious Organizations include the Sacred Heart R.C. Church, Island Park United Methodist Church, Jewish Center of Island Park, Harvest on the Atlantic and the Greek Orthodox Church of Panaghia.
The fire department received a sizeable grant in spring of 2009 from the Rampart Brokerage Corporation. The grant helped to purchase an air filling station for self-contained breathing apparatuses. The grant was made through the Fireman’s Fund Heritage program whose mission is to support firefighters for safer communities.
Notable residents include United States Senator Al D’Amato and Hockey Player Anthony Bitetto.
