Hunts Point is a neighborhood located in the south Bronx bound by the Bruckner Expressway, the Bronx River and the East River. The primary street through Hunts Point is Hunts Point Avenue home to many businesses and industry.
Before the Dutch bought the land, the Mohicans lived in Hunts Point in wigwams. England then took the land from the Dutch. The main source of trade and hunting was beavers that swamp in the Bronx River. During the American Revolution, Major Abraham Leggett made his home here. Revolutionary Poet Joseph Rodman Drake also made his home here.
Most of the land area in Hunts Point today is dominated by industry with a small but dense residential pocket that occupies the high ground in the northern half of the peninsula, along Hunts Point Avenue. Most housing developments in Hunts Point are apartment buildings and row houses.
The neighborhood is also home to one of the largest food distribution facilities in the world, covering 329 acres. The Center opened in 1967 and 1974 and in 2005 Hunts Point became the site for New York City’s New Fulton Fish Market. Not to be confused with Nova Scotia, do not do that! Hunts Point is a neighborhood in the Bronx, silly pants.
