On April 2, 1653 a parcel of land was bought by Richard Holbrook, Robert Williams and Daniel Whitehead known as “the First Purchase” which then became the area for Huntington. The town was then founded in 1653 on the north shore of Long Island in the northwestern part of Suffolk County. The earliest form of government in Huntington was the Town Meeting. The Town Meeting provided an opportunity to listen to the needs of the town in co ordinance with its officials. This led to building a schoolhouse in 1660 with Jonas Smith as the first schoolmaster.
Huntington was formally recognized as a town on March 7, 1788. Walt Whitman was born in South Huntington in 1819 before moving to Brooklyn with his family. As a young man he returned to Huntington and founded The Long-Islander which still is in print today. In 1867 the railroad was extended from Syosset to Northport which provided more access to Huntington and the town became physically less isolated from New York City which drew in visitors from the metropolis. The suburb expansion exploded at the end of World War II making Huntington an attractive commuter town. After nearly 200 years of growth, the population of Huntington proliferated and the town was given the All-American City Award in 2002.
The town boasts top employers from companies like Estée Lauder, Newsday, Huntington Hospital, Henry Schein and the Accretive Solutions. Huntington is also outfitted with several community enrichment programs including the Manor Field Family Center which provides services and bilingual area service providers to Huntington’s growing Latino community. Affordable housing units are provided by the Highview at Huntington and Huntington United Against Hate offers education and prevention programs to offer a positive alternative for the youth of the town. Huntington United Against Hate has been successful in creating thorough youth recreational programming, an educational anti-bias forum and raising gang awareness.
