Howard Beach is a neighborhood in the southwestern portion of Queens bound by the Belt Parkway, South Conduit Avenue, Jamaica Bay, 102-104th Streets and 78th Street. Howard Beach is a coastal community with a waterfront view and the most elaborate homes in South Queens. There are several neighborhoods within Howard Beach with many six-story buildings and garden units.
The beach neighborhood was established in the 1890s by Willian J. Howard, a Brooklyn glove manufacturer. He moved into the neighborhood and bought lots of land so he could have his goat farm, whose skins he’d use for gloves. When the Long Island Rail Road established in 1905, a newer neighborhood opened up including a Post Office and a Casino. After War World II many Cape-Cod and High Ranch style houses sprang up on Howard Beach.
Howard Beach includes the neighborhoods of Howard Beach, Old Howard Beach, Hamilton Beac, Ramblersville, Rockwood Park, Lindenwood and Howard Park.
Nearby is JFK Airport, one of two airports in New York City. JFK is the busiest international; air passenger gateways to the United States and is the leading freight gateway to the country by shipment value. This airport was named after John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. This was the airport where The Beatles first landed in America before their US premier on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Howard Beach got a lot of press in the 1980s when a gang of white youths who beat three black men who had stopped in the neighborhood, chasing one into the street where he was fatally hit by a passing car. In 2005 another white-on-black violence erupted in the neighborhood.
Despite these events, the neighborhood would like to be remembered for their quiet streets, large and beautiful homes and interesting geography.
Notable residents include Jack Kerouac, Woody Guthrie, DJ Skribble and Vitas Gerulaitis.
