Hewlett Bay Park is a village and one part of the Five Towns of Nassau County. Other Five Towns include Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck and the hamlet Hewlett. Hewlett Bay Park is the wealthiest of the villages in Five Towns. Several commuters have been living in Five Towns and working in Manhattan because of its short 35-45 minute train ride. And with homes designed by Stanford White and Marcel Breuer, it’s clear to see why. Or maybe it’s because of the feature in the New York Times.
Sanford White was the famed architect of the second Madison Square Garden, the Washington Square Arch and the Cosmopolitan Building, headquarters of Cosmopolitan Magazine in Irvington, NY in 1895. Mr. White was also the lover of Vaudeville star Evelyn Nesbit and was shot by her husband Harry Kendall Thaw in what was called “The Trial of the Century”. Marcel Breuer was an architect, furniture designer and master of Modernism. He is most known for designing the Wassily Chair. He firmly believed a well rounded education in all the arts is the only way to learn.
In early Hewlett Bay history, the illustrious Hewlett clan bought the area, settling first in Hewett Village then throughout the Island. The most famous of the Hewlett clan was Mr. Cirker. Mr. Cirker was a Tory sympathizer who, some say, tried to poison George Washington. By 1928 Hewlett Bay Park was incorporated into Nassau County. The current mayor is Steven Kaufman, deputy mayor is Ales Salomon, with Trustees Nina Kreisner, Jay Levvy, Alex Salomon and Andrea Soskel. The Village Meetings are held every third Monday of each month.
The public schools in the Five Towns are considered some of the best in ,Long Island and a number of notable private schools including Lawrence Country Day School and Woodmere Academy. Schools of Hewlett Bay Park include Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls and George W. Hewlett High School.
Hewlett Bay Park’s Recreation Commission establishes a joint playground and recreation commission with the Village of Hewlett Harbor to administer Willow Pond Park. This park may only be used by residents of Hewlett Bay Park and Hewlett Harbor.
