Originally known as Hammond’s Mills, the unincorporated hamlet of Mount Pleasant has been a place of rest since before the Revolutionary War. Including a famous burial ground with the remains of Babe Ruth, James Cagney, Billy Martin and Ernesto Lecuona.

A portion of the Philipse Manor was on Hawthorne. The Manor lasted until 1693 until 1779, the land was first part of a Dutch patroonship and was eventually bought by Englishman Frederick Philipse I. Philipse made the manor a legal entity in 1693 with a royal charter. Hawthorne was also where British army Major John André stopped to ask for directions after his meeting with Benedict Arnold. André was later hung as a spy during the American Revolutionary War.

After the Revolutionary Way, the village was named Unionville and its population consisted mostly of farmers. The Reformed Church of Unionville (Hawthorne Reformed Church) was built here in 1818. In 1832 a one-room school house was built and by 1847 a railroad station was established here, named Unionville. The station was a stop off the New York Central?s Harlem Division. A post office was established on February 10, 1851.

Mother Mary Alphonsa, or Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, founded the Rosary Hill Home in Sherman Park for those suffering from incurable cancer. She also founded the Dominican Order, now the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne. After she opened the cancer home, the hamlet of Unionville was renamed to Hawthorne after Mother Mary Alphonsa. The Rosary Hill is a free home for persons who cannot afford to pay for care. No payment of any kind is accepted from patients or their families, nor from the government. The Home was established in 1901 and has "served the special end-of-life needs of (our) patients and their family members."

Hawthorne residents are served by the Mount Pleasant Central School District. The schools in this district include: the Hawthorne Elementary School, Westlake Middle School and Westlake High School.
