In 1695, John Harrison was asked to ride in the area of Harrison for 24 hours by the Siwanoy chief Pathungo. Whatever land John Harrison was able to cover in the day, was sold to him. According to a town historian, Charles Dawson, the land that became Harrison was sold three times to three different settlers and John Harrison was the first to file claims with the provincial government of New York.
There are records of Harrison town meetings dating back to April 5, 1774 when the Freeholders and inhabitants of the precinct met and elected the following officials: Major General Thomas Thomas (Supervisor), William Miller (town clerk), William Miller (constable and collector) and Stephan Fields and Job Haddon Jr. (assessors). On March 7, 1788 Purchase, New York became part of the Town of Harrison.
Field Tavern was an important stop for stagecoaches traveling between New York and Connecticut directly across Lake Street. The original stagecoach path is still in use today. There is a rare milestone on Old Lake Street marking the stagecoach route which reads “Preserved by Benjamin I. Taylor Supervisor, Town of Harrison, July 4th 1926”. Only a few of these markers left in the United States.
The current elected officials of the Town of Harrison are: Mayor Joan Walsh, Councilman Joseph Cannella, Councilman Fred Sciliano, Councilman Pat Vetere and Councilwoman Marlane Amelio. The Town of Harrison is served by the Harrison Central School District which includes: Harrison High School, LMK Middle School, Harrison Avenue Elementary, Parsons Elementary, S.J. Preston Elementary and Purchase Elementary.
Purchase is a hamlet within the northeastern part of Harrison. The State University of New York at Purchase and Manhattanville College are located in Purchase. The land of Purchase is also where several of the earliest Harrison residents built their estates including Major General Thomas Thomas. Other notable residents include early pro basketball player Lou Bender, “singing cowboy” Tex Fletcher, basketball coach Bobby Gonzales and baseball pitcher Mariano Rivera.
