Garden City was founded by millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart in 1869 and is a village in the Town of Hempstead. The name also includes the unincorporated areas of the region like Garden City South, Garden City Park and East Garden City. The famed take off of Charles Lindbergh was in a former airfield in East Garden City. The village was created to offer an upscale community outside of New York City. The Garden City Hotel, designed by McKim, Mead, and White, was its main attraction. Today many of its original Victorian homes still stand.
In the early days of Garden City, the neighboring Hempstead helped to bring a great deal of industry and population to Garden City keeping it afloat. By 1910 Doubleday, Page and Co. moved their elite publishing firms to Garden City. The Doubleday Company purchased most of the west side of Garden City. Walter Hines, co-founder of Doubleday was named Ambassador to Great Britain.
The urban flight after World War II kept Garden City growing. One of the first Waldorf Schools in the United States was founded in 1947 as part of Adelphi University. By the 1970s the famed Garden City Hotel declared bankruptcy, closed and was later demolished. A new hotel stands in its place.
The Garden City school district is served by seven schools: Hemlock, Homestead and Locust primary schools, Stewart and Stratford Elementary schools, the Garden City Middle School and the Garden City High School. Adelphi College is also in Garden City becoming the first four-year college in Nassau County.
Notable residents include Nobel Prize Winner Steven Chu, Colorado Rockies Pitcher Matt Daley, Journalist John Gibson, Television Anchor Greg Kelly, Actress Susan Lucci, Actor Danny Masterson, Horse Jockey Richard Migliore and entrepreneur Joe Mohen.
