Floral Park is an incorporated village in Nassau County with a population of 16,800. The village was originally known as Plainfield and marked the western edge of the Hempstead Plains. In the 1870s farms and tiny villages dominated the area and had more than two dozen flower farms after the Civil War. At this time the area was called East Hinsdale.

When John Lewis Childs moved to the area, he changed everything. Mr. Childs moved to the area to work for C.L. Allen as a seed seller and was able to build his own seed and bulb business and started America’s first seed catalog business. With all of his wealth, he bought a lot of land in the area and named each street after flowers and eventually renamed the area Floral Park. When the Post Office, who greatly helped Child’s business growth, changed its name to Floral Park the LIRR followed suit and renamed its East Hinsdale station Floral Park. By 1899 Floral Park was part of Nassau County and incorporated as a village in 1908 and John Lewis Childs served as its president for one year.

The two Floral Park high schools are part of the Sewanhaka Central High School District. The high schools are Floral Park Memorial High School and Sewanhaka High School. The three elementary schools are John Lewis Childs School, Floral Park-Bellerose School and Our Lady of Victory Elementary School. The Floral Park Public Library opened its doors on 1923 and moved to its current location on Caroline Place in 1964.

Floral Park’s fire companies include the Hook & Ladder Company, founded in 1893 and the Alert Engine Company, founded in 1907. Both companies still operate in their original facilities. An ambulance service began in 1970. The fire department is one hundred percent volunteers.
