In the early 1700s Elsmford was known as Storm’s Bridge and as Hall’s Corner during the mid-19th century. Its present name was adopted in 1870 and inspired by an elm tree that stood about thirty feet in circumference. In the early 1700s Abraham Storm built a tavern in central Elmsford, which became a meeting place for French and Colonial officers. The tavern’s name was O’Briens and its barmaid would garnish drinks with tail feathers of chickens, thus bore the name “cocktail”.
In the 1800s, Elmsford was not much more than a small hamlet with a church, a school, a store, and some farms. With the arrival of the railroad and station, New Yorkers moved to Elmsford and expanded its population. This population growth culminated Elmford’s incorporation in 1910. An Elmsford resident operated the first radio station in the county WRW and several buildings around Elmsford were important meeting places during the American Revolutionary War.
The Elmsford Board of Education runs the schools of Elmsford, whose mission is “to enhance the teaching and learning process and to raise achievement for all students while developing mutual respect in our diverse community.” The schools include: Carl L. Dixson Primary School, Alice E. Grady Elementary School and Alexander Hamilton High School. All of the schools are currently managed by Superintendent Dr. Barbara Peters. The school district helps enrich the community with a blog from their Superintendent, a dual language academy, a reading program and a list of coupons for sporting equipment and school supplies.
The village of Elmsford is currently run by Mayor Robert Williams with Trustees: William Zimkin, Edward Rush, Michael Eannazzo and Sydney Henry. 2010 marked the Elmsford Centennial which was celebrated with a parade, fundraisers, galas and hosted events.
A point of interest difficult to miss is a life-size statue of “Dollar”, a famous racehorse given to the village in 1955 by the Empire Racing Association. You can find “Dollar” in front of Village Hall on South Stone Avenue.
