Rockaway is a village in Nassau County in the Town of Hempstead, adjacent to Lynbrook, Hewlett and Oceanside. At its inception, Rockwaay was a shipping and trading center for the south shore of ,Long Island because of its inland deep channels. Soon Joseph Haviland built a grist mill with a land grant in 1688. This Haviland-Davison Grist Mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. From 1688 to 1869 the area was known as Near Rockaway. East Rockaway was incorporated in 1900.
In East Rockaway there are two elementary schools and one Junior/Senior high school. Each grade of the high school consists of about 100 students. The St. Raymonds Catholic School consisting of pre-K through 8th grade is also in East Rockaway. The East Rockaway High School’s Football, Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, and Track are all excelling in competitive high school sports. The Varsity Football team, for instance, won “The Big Four” championship and made it to Hofstra University for the county finals. Star Don Murray (Bus Stop) is from East Rockaway.
East Rockaway is governed by a mayor and a Board of Trustees. The current mayor is Mayor Ed Sieban, the Deputy Mayor is Richard Meagher along with Trustee Bruno Romano, Trustee Irene Villacci and Trustee Francis Lenahan keep Rockaway going. The Board meets on the second Monday of every month and members of the community are always welcome. The major departments of the village include the Clerks Office, the Building Department, Public Works, Recreation, Auxiliary Police and the Justice Court.
Currently Mayor Ed Sieban and Deputy Mayor Richard Meagher coordinated an initiative called East Rockaway E.A.R.N. (Economic Assistance and Revitalization Network) and the “goal is to nurture revitalize, and help the business and commercial areas of the Village flourish by having all the stakeholders work together to identify problems and solutions, needs and opportunities, that will help us reach that goal.” (Mayor Ed Sieban) In these times, East Rockaway works together.
