DUMBO is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, located between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge at the East River in Brooklyn. The area includes the DUMBO park, the DUMBO arts center and the DUMBO general store along with a collection of night hot spots.
In 2007, DUMBO was designated as Brooklyn’s 90th historic district bound by John Street, York Street, Main street and Bridge street. Today it is one of New York City’s premier arts districts with for-profit galleries and non-for-profit institutions like St. Ann’s Warehouse and the A.I.R. Gallery.
Before the Brooklyn Bridge opened, DUMBO was known as the Fulton Landing where the Manhattan-Brooklyn ferry ported. After the Brooklyn Bridge was built, DUMBO was primarily a manufacturing district, with warehouses and factories making machinery, paper boxes and the famous Brillo soap pads. With deindustrialization, the neighborhood became primarily residential when these factory buildings were converted to loft building and artist studio spaces. As Manhattan became more expensive, more residents moved to DUMBO. The founder of the DUMBO arts center, Joy Glidden was a catalyst for change and development in the neighborhood. Her model for the revitalization of waterfront neighborhoods is being used globally.
Restaurants in the area include Grimaldi’s, the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, the River Café and Pete’s Downtown Restaurant. The parks include the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Fulton Ferry.
Theater has been a large part of the neighborhood with experimental spaces like St. Ann’s Warehouse and Galapagos Arts Center nearby.
DUMBO’s revitalization worked, it is one of the most desired places to live and it has the city’s highest level of creative capital.
