The Village of Cedarhurst was incorporated in September of 1910, around the same time the Village Hall opened and a post office. The village was named after the groupings of trees surrounding the post office, its early name was Ocean Point. Cedarhurst is part of the “Five Towns” within the Town of Hempstead. The other “Five Towns” of Hempstead include Lawrence, the hamlets of Woodmere and Inwood and “The Hewletts” made up of the villages Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck and the hamlet of Hewlett and Woodsburgh.
Annual concerts like Under the Gazebo features local talent like T.J. Tomlin’s Swing Band, Gerry Finley and the Caraband and “Milago” the ultimate Santana tribute band are all part of the community entertainment.
The Rockaway Hunting Club first drawing people to the area and when rail service came in 1869, more folks started showing up. The Hunt Club was partially responsible for changing the name from Ocean Point to Cedarhurst. Central Avenue was the main place to find boutiques and upscale shops for many years, today many shops and restaurants cater to its Orthodox Jewish community.
Cedarhurst is part of School District 15 and is served by the Lawrence Public Schools, home to the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway High School and Kahal School. There are also a number of shuls including The Chofetz Chaim Torah Center, Congregation Tifereth Zvi, Kehilas Bais Yehuda Tzvi (The Red Shul), Agudath Israel of The Five Towns, Chabad of the Five Towns, and the Young Israel of Lawrence Cedarhurst.
The Local government is run by Mayor Andrew J. Parise, Deputy Mayor Benjamin Weinstock, Village Justice Hon. Martin Zuckerbrod, Village Trustee Ronald Lanzilotta, Village Trustee Ari Brown and Village Trustee Myrna Zisman. The town is also becoming a commuter town, with Manhattan and Queens a mere 35-45 minutes away.
