Carroll Gardens is a western neighborhood in Brooklyn just southwest of Boerum Hill and north of Red Hook. Before the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and Gowanus Expressway were built, Carroll Gardens was considered to be part of Red Hook. After the Expressways opened, the neighborhoods split and Carroll Gardens formed a style of its own.
Originally settled by Irish-Americans and Norwegian-Americans and founded the Norwegian Seaman’s Church, which can still be found on the corner of First Place and Clinton Street. A signature architectural feature of the neighborhood is the front gardens on each brownstone. The Carroll Gardens Historic District includes some of the finest examples of these brownstone front gardens.
Like a lot of Brooklyn neighborhoods, young families and condominiums are cropping up throughout the neighborhood. Similar to Fort Greene, the Carroll Gardens gentrification doesn’t seem to be driving anyone out and the neighborhood bond is very strong.
The main streets are Court and Smith Street on the eastern end of the neighborhood. Most businesses are in low-rise brick buildings and feature the eclectic and rising population. Most families live in divided brownstones and some are moving into the new condominiums. A community mural next to the Carroll Street subway stop called the “Democracy Wall” featured letters and murals to the community. This wall was covered by construction.
The most notable aspects of this neighborhood is the amount of the people you don’t know smiling and saying hello to you on the streets. The Carroll Gardens Park in the center of the neighborhood is flocked by children and families and the Italian shops and restaurants remain along with the new countless restaurants. This seamless combination is a huge nod to the Carroll Gardens neighborhood association, who makes sure the keep the semblance of this neighborhood.
