Boerum Hill is a neighborhood in Brooklyn in the northwestern portion of Brooklyn bound by State Street, 4th Avenue, Smith Street and Warren Street. The neighborhood is named after the Boerum family’s farm that occupied most of the area. However there is speculation over whether or not the name was changed to improve the neighborhood’s appeal and property values. After World War II until the 1960s, the neighborhood was mostly Puerto Rican and African American has now turned into middle to upper-class neighborhood of twenty to thirty somethings.

The neighborhood has several public schools and loads of restaurants and shops on Smith Street. One of the neighborhood’s favorite shops is Ouidi Theodore’s shop the Brooklyn Circus, or the BKc, which has now has shops all over the world.

The late Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams purchased a brownstone in the neighborhood in 2005 and lived there with their daughter until their breakup. They often shared how much they enjoyed the neighborhood’s quiet coffee houses and restaurants.

These restaurants which have created a pleasant nightlife in the neighborhood and put one of its restaurants on New York Observer’s Top 10 Greenmarket Restaurant list (for The Grocery). Over the last 5 years, Smith Street has built up its restaurants and nightlife and often attracts many diners from either side of the bridge.

Like Brooklyn Heights and Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill is another great place for families and renters who are looking for a quiet place to live where people talk to one another.
