The village of Bellerose is in the Town of Hempstead. Bellerose was founded when Helen Marsh of Lynn bought 77 acres in Floral Park, New York in 1907 hoping to build a model community. By 1910, the first home of Bellerose was built. Soon she swayed the ,Long Island Rail Road to build a station in the new village. After allegations of naming the town after her daughter, Helen claimed that she simply liked the sound of the name, the homeowners officiated the name Bellerose in 1917. Bellerose is a village with clearly defined principalities which provides services closest to its residents like garbage collection, a fire department and street lighting and building codes. The Bellerose fire department is a volunteer based organization with drills every Tuesday open to new members.
Bellerose Village has its own mayor and board of trustees, the current mayor is Bruno DeFranchesci. As of the 2000 census, there were 1,173 people living in Bellerose Village, the median age is 39 years old. A community based village, the mayor sends out personal newsletters at the start of each season announcing upcoming holiday celebrations and outreach programs and budget plans for the village. Seasonal events like the bi-annual picnic at the train station or the Bellerose Fire Department Spook House tour are favorites. Bellerose has one of the school districts in Nassau County and none of the single family homes are alike. The Village Hall, Police Booth and Fire Department have been placed on the National and State Registers of historic places.
In memory of its founder, Bellerose has supported women’s organizations with two sectors of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC); the Women’s Club of Bellerose and the Junior Women’s Club of Bellerose.
The Boards of Bellerose include the Board of Architectural Review and the Board of Appeals who are responsible for keeping the architecture of the homes and residence within the guidelines of the community.
