Bedford is a town in Westchester County, New York and includes three unincorporated hamlets: Bedford Hills, Bedford Village and Katonah.

The area that became Bedford was bought by a group of twenty two puritans from Connecticut who bought the land from Chief Katonah on December 23, 1680. The three mile tract of land was then known as “Hopp Ground” and soon became part of Connecticut with a 1697 patent. Bedford became a part of New York when King William III of England issued a royal decree in 1700 and fixed the boundaries within a six-mile square.

During the Colonial period, the town held a level of significance and considered neutral territory during most of the Revolutionary War. At this time Bedford also served as the county seat of Westchester County until the Town was burned by the British on July 2, 1779. The oldest government building in Westchester is the Court House in Bedford Village, built in 1787. In 1847 the railroad came and gave the area a name of its own and a post office. The area then became filled with dairy farms because of this new transit system and Bedford became a strong farming community.

The town of Bedford is governed by a five member Town Board made up of the Supervisor and four Town Board members. The current Town Supervisor is Lee V.A. Roberts with Board Members: Chris Burdick, Peter A. Cryssos, Francis T. Corcoran and David Gabrielson.

The Town is served by the Bedford School District and the Katonah-Lewisboro School District. The schools include: Bedford Hills Elementary School, Bedford Village Elementary School, Fox Lane High School, Fox Lane Middle School, Mount Kisco Elementary School, Pound Ridge Elementary School, West Patent Elementary School, John Jay High School, John Jay Middle School, Increase Miller Elementary School, Katonah Elementary School, Lewisboro Elementary School and Meadow Pond Elementary School.

Notable residents of Bedford include: Chevy Chase, Gertrude Berg, Bea Arthur, Ralph Lauren and Martha Stewart.
