Barnum is a small hamlet in Nassau County named after clothier Peter C. Barnum, who owned several pockets of land in ,Long Island, and his wife Sarah Ann Baldwin. There was a myth going for some time that it was actually P.T. Barnum, the circus showman, who owned and named the island. Even after it was proved that it was the clothier and not the circus tycoon, locals still speak of the time when giraffes and ponies trained on the island. Barnum Island is separated from the Village of Island Park by the ,Long Island Rail Road. Barnum Island has its own fire district and is under contract with the Island Park Fire Department for emergency situations.
Barnum has a population density of 2,631.8 per square mile with 854 housing units, as of the 200 census.
