Baldwin is a community within the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County with a population of 22,200 as of 2007. Baldwin is a hamlet and served by the Babylon Branch of the ,Long Island Rail Road.

Natives of the area between Parsonage Creek near Oceanside and Milburn Creek were the Native American tribe known as Merokes or Merrick, am Algoquian tribe. The Algoquian tribe wsa on e of the largest in North America and lived by hunting, fishing and supplementing their diet with corn, beans, squash and wild rice. Two early settlers from England and Flsuhing John Spragg and John Hicks extended Hempstead village south to the salt meadows. A gristmill built in 1686 attracted more settlers who engaged in fishing, farming, raising Longwood, and breeding and raising sheep. The first churches were built in 1810 and 1872 and the first school was built in 1833.

After being settled, the area was called Hick’s Neck, then Milburn and was finally named Baldwin in honor of Thomas Baldwin who was a sixth generation member of the Baldwin family and a leading merchant in Milburn at that time. Mr. Baldwin owned a general store, a hotel and a sawmill. By 1899 several people started to move to the area after a local realtor referred to the area as “Beautiful Baldwin” and by 1939 Baldwin became the largest unincorporated village in New York State.

The first all-American monoplane was designed, built and successfully flown by Arthur and Albert Heinrich in May 1910.

Baldwin has its own school district including the Baldwin Senior High School, a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence and the eighth-largest high school in Nassau County.
