Armonk is a hamlet within the town of North Castle in Westchester County and home to the global headquarters of information technology company IBM. This multinational technology and consulting firm has a 25 acre site in the hamlet, where its headquarters has been since 1964. IMB is not only a leading technological firm (est. in the 1880s) it was voted the number one global green company of 2010 by Newsweek magazine.
North Castle?s first town meeting was held on April 6, 1738 and incorporated on March 7, 1788. The home of the New Castle Historical Society is located in Armonk, at the Revolutionary War landmark Smith?s Tavern. Smith?s Tavern was (allegedly) built in the late 1700?s for John Smith, a former Continental Army captain. Smith owned and operated this house as a tavern, post office and a stopping point on the Danbury stage service. Smith?s Tavern was a major local meeting place and operated as a tavern until 1884. In the 1974, the house was given to the North Castel Historical Society and currently operates as a museum.
All schools in the Byram Hills Central School District are located in Armonk. The district serves North Castle, Mount Pleasant and Bedford. The schools within the district include: Byram Hills High School, H.C. Crittenden Middle School, Wampus Elementary School and Coman Hill Elementary School. Several annual events of Armonk include the Armonk Outdoor Art Show sponsored by Friends of the North Castle Public Library. The event gathers nearly 200 artists of varied mediums in IBM Park to show and sell their work. The proceeds from the art show go to the Art After Dark Preview Party. A community theater group, the Armonk Players, is also sponsored by Friends of the North Castle Public Library.
Armonk is also home to Wampus Pond. Wampus Pond is Algonquian for ?opossum? and was once part of the New York City water supply.
