Ardsley is a village in Westchester County and part of the Town of Greenburgh. Bordering communities include the Village of Dobbs Ferry, the hamlet Hartsdale, the City of Greenville and the Village of Irvington.
The land that became Ardsley was originally inhabited by the Weckqueskecks, a Mohican branch of the Algonquin nation. The main road was once a trail used by the Weckqueskecks to travel from the Hudson River to Long Island Sound. After most of the land had been bought by Dutch and English settlers, it became a part of the Frederick Philipse Manor which was sold to former tenants after the American Revolution. These tenants mostly farmed the land.
The 1880s turned Ardsley from a farming community into a commuter town. In the early 1880s the Putnam Railroad was built and the New Croton Aqueduct was constructed. Soon many lots were developed, electric lights installed and road improved. The Village took on the name Ardsley and was incorporated in 1896. The name is attributed to Cyrus West Field, who owned a great deal of land in the area and named it Ardsley Park after the birthplace of his immigrant English ancestor Zechariah Field. Cyrus West Field used a great deal of his ancestor’s money to get the post office established.
The village is serviced by the Ardsley Union Free School District which includes: Ardsley High School, Ardsley Middle School and Concord Road School. The Village of Ardsley is governed by Mayor Jay Leon, Deputy Mayor Peter Porchino, with Trustees: Beverly Levine, Gary Malone and Larry Nardecchia. Several newspapers serve the area including The Journal News, The Rivertowns Enterprise and the InTown Westchester Magazine.
The Ardsley Public Library includes several reading rooms, seven public computers, two children’s computers, a community room and free Wi-Fi. The library is located at 9 American Legion Drive in Ardsley New York.
